Most people pose one-off queries to their favorite large language model, asking questions such as “What’s the most fun you can have in Coronado, with all your clothes on?” But, you can also use it to do tedious tasks that need to be carried out repeatedly — provided it knows how. That’s why I found myself teaching Claude a skill.

Landscape design with Claude: My front-yard border looks great!
Claude and I make a great team: I constructed a prompt for a front-border planting scheme; Claude designed a layout and recommended a list of plants; I drove to the garden centre, purchased them, and arranged for a landscaper to plant them. I can recommend landscape design with Claude!

Vibe-coding with Claude: A Lunar Alignment Calculator
I recently built a Solar Alignment Calculator, with the (considerable) help of Claude. Could “we” pull off a similar trick, a Lunar Alignment Calculator, for predicting the alignment of moonsets with terrestrial landmarks? And, would it take into account all those phases the moon passes through each month?
This one could be complicated!
Flushed with the success of my first vibe-coding experience — a personalized app for calculating when the sun would set behind a local point of interest — my thoughts turned to an obvious extension: an analogous app for determining when the moon would set at a specific point on the horizon.
